Hi,

My journey as a Nurse Educator began in 1996, soon after I was graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (1992-1996) from the College of Nursing, Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh, India. Subsequently, I was graduated with a Master's degree in Nursing Education (online) from Saint Joseph College, Connecticut, USA, in May 2010.

I also completed a Certificate program on, Renewal of Primary Health Care in Americas (online) from PAHO/ WHO, Georgetown, Guyana in 2012. I went on to complete a Basic introduction course to Portuguese language from the Brazilian Embassy, Georgetown in July 2017.  In December 2017, I successfully completed a massive Open Online Course on, Introduction to Technology-Enabled Learning offered jointly by the Commonwealth of Learning and the Athabasca University, Canada.

Working Experience:

In India:

I worked as a Nurse Educator in two different professional nursing training Institutions and as a Nurse Manager in a Maternity Hospital in India for six years (1996 to 2002). During this tenure, I taught several nursing courses and supervised professional nursing students in a wide range of clinical settings. Courses taught were: Medical and Surgical Nursing; Community Health Nursing; Maternal and Child Health Nursing; Pediatric Nursing; Psychiatric Nursing; Fundamentals of Nursing and Ward Management.

In Guyana:

School of Nursing, Saint Joseph Mercy Hospital, Georgetown:

I worked in the capacity of a Nurse Educator, Assistant Director and the Director of School of Nursing, at Saint Joseph Mercy Hospital for six years (2003 to 2009). During this period, I was actively engaged in teaching various nursing courses and carried out administrative functions of the School of Nursing. Courses taught were: Medical and Surgical Nursing; Community Health Nursing; Maternal and Child Health Nursing; Pediatric Nursing; Psychiatric Nursing; Fundamentals of Nursing and Ward Management.

University of Guyana:

Since 2009, I have been working as a Lecturer, BSc Nursing Programme, Department of Public Health, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Guyana. I have taught several nursing courses in the previous curriculum of BSc nursing programme (2009 to 2011), including Innovation in Nursing; Current professional issues in Nursing; Reflective Practice; Home based care; Primary Health Care; Nutrition, Nursing Research and Health Promotion and Education.

I functioned in the capacity of Nursing Coordinator for the BSc nursing programme during the academic years, 2010/11; 2011/12 and 2014/15. During my tenure as Nursing Coordinator (2010/11), I played a key role in coordinating a Curriculum Committee and upgrading the BSc Nursing Curriculum (post RN) to the regional BSc Nursing Curriculum (post RN). I have represented BSc Nursing programme, University of Guyana at several national, regional and international professional and research conferences.

Presently, I am teaching the following courses for the BSc Nursing programme:

NUR 4101 - Leadership and Management Roles in Nursing (5 credits);

NUR 4104 - Teaching Strategies in Nursing (4 credits);

NUR 3204 - Nursing Process and Advanced Health Care Assessment (4 credits).

Each academic year, I also supervise several undergraduate students in their Research Projects (NUR 4100 - Nursing Research) as well as in Clinical Settings (NUR 4201 - Nursing Practicum).

My areas of expertise include: 

Curriculum Development in Nursing Education; Teaching Methodologies in Nursing Education; Leadership and Management roles in Nursing - Leading a Change Process; Nursing Professionalism; Evidence Based Nursing Practice.

  • Perceptions of final year professional nursing students, registered nurses and nurse educators regarding challenges and strategies in nursing education and nursing practice in Guyana and in India, 2015. A mixed study.
