About Ms. Lisa Edwards

In 2013, Ms. Edwards graduated from the University of Guyana after reading for a degree in Public Communication Studies. She describes that during her course of study at UG, she was always curious about the representation of women in the media and the roles women play in media production. Thereafter, in 2015, she went on to complete a post-graduate certificate at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, Barbados, in Gender and Development Studies. This experience, she describes as cementing her desire to pursue a Master of Science degree in Gender and Development Studies, which she also pursued at UWI, Nita Barrow Unit, Cave Hill. During her course of study, she was ccepted for a Canada-CARICOM Leadership Scholarship where she was hosted at the Centre for Feminist Research at York University under the supervision of Prof. Kamala Kempadoo. She graduated in 2018. Her thesis focused on Media Representation of Suicide in Online News Reports in Guyana. Lisa describes gender as dynamic and relevant in every aspect of our daily lives. Thus, her background in Communication Studies allows her to use a gender lens to analyze the media in how they construct our stories. She therefore, encourages anyone, in any field of study to pursue a gender course to gain a deeper understanding of self and society. Her interest includes gender, suicide, representation, domestic violence and media. Apart from which, she is also interested in the making and producing of documentaries around social issues.
